FCC to Vote on Internet Regulation Plan Despite Economic Warnings

Posted by Brian Borgman on December 20, 2010

Lawmakers are on high alert as the Federal Communications Commission prepares to vote on a plan to regulate the Internet despite warnings that it could choke industry investment and hurt the economy as a whole.

Scary stuff!  This is a very disturbing story for me.  I, for one, believe the government already has their nose in way to much of our personal lives as it is.  Unfortunately, if you think about how much each of us is online each and everyday, this would give the government even more access into our everyday personal and work life and habits.  The government continues to regulate industry after industry in the guise of our personal protection and fairness for all.  However, the truth of the matter is, the more regulation and intervention they create for our “protection”, the more red tape created which in turn causes higher prices and continues to create a divide in our society between the “have’s” and the “have not’s”.

SIP trunking gaining on T1 lines as companies seek efficiency | Infonectics Research

Posted by Brian Borgman on July 9, 2010

Due to the fact that I couldn’t link directly to the appropriate story on www.infonetics.com (http://www.infonetics.com/newsletters/Enterprise-VoIP-and-Unified-Communication-070810.html#2), below is the info they posted re: SIP trunk deployments.

In my opinion, businesses in the Louisville/Lexington, KY markets need to be extremely cautious with SIP trunk deployment.  With minimal deployments and very pessimistic views from provider engineers on their product offerings, we’ve heard/seen more negative than positive results in our markets

SIP trunking gaining on T1 lines as companies seek efficiency

Infonetics Research (http://twitter.com/infonetics) today released excerpts from SIP Trunking Deployment Strategies: North American Enterprise Survey, part of its Continuous Research Service series of analyst notes and surveys on the enterprise VoIP and unified communications market.

ANALYST NOTE

“There is a perception in the market place that SIP trunking is all about cost savings, and to a certain degree that’s true: SIP trunking allows organizations to build a more efficient trunking infrastructure, thus lowering their monthly telecom expenditures. But service providers should take note that when it comes to selecting a SIP trunking service provider, the most important criterion is reliability, not cost,” notes Matthias Machowinski, directing analyst for enterprise voice and data at Infonetics Research.

SIP TRUNKING SURVEY HIGHLIGHTS

  • Although many organizations have deployed VoIP on their premises, they still use legacy technologies to connect to the PSTN, with T1 lines the most commonly used trunking service today through 2012
    • However, SIP trunk use is growing, and by 2012 will be the second most commonly deployed trunking service
  • Topping the list of reasons to deploy SIP trunking are the ability to centralize applications, enabling multimedia communication, and easier management/flexibility
  • Cisco leads the list of installed PBX manufacturers by a wide margin, followed by Avaya
  • AT&T and Verizon are used most often as providers of SIP trunking services by survey respondents
